Our fire glass solutions
To ensure that the expected fire safety function is achieved, fire or heat-resistant glass must always be specified as part of a tested and approved glazing system and installed by specialists. Here at Hond & Langer, we recognise the importance of safety, which is why supply and install independently and rigorously tested fire glass to local property owners. As a passive fire resistance measure, fire glass won’t sound an alarm nor extinguish a fire, but the role it plays within a functioning fire safety system is no less important. What fire glass does do is restrict the spread of smoke and flames from one room to the next – this act of compartmentation can prove invaluable when it comes to restricting the damage of a fire to a limited area. By slowing the spread of a fire, the occupants of a building have more time to evacuate as safely as possible given the circumstances.
It’s important to recognise that only specially treat fire glass can perform this task. In the event of a fire, standard glass breaks at an approximate temperature of 120°C, tempered glass provide more protection in a fire, breaking at approximately 260°C, whereas, in comparison, fire glass maintains its structure in temperatures over 870°C.

Fire glass testing with Hond & Langer
To assume the title of fire glass suitable for properties in Enfield, Barnet, Hampstead, Palmers Green, Southgate and the London area, rigorous, independent testing must first be passed. While the majority of these tests include monitoring performance at increasing temperatures, the most important is the thermal shock, or “fire hose stream”, test. Should a fire break out on your property, fire glass must remain in its frame for as long as possible to prevent the spread of smoke and flames, and aside from the searing temperatures, fire glass also needs to withstand the thermal shock of being hit with much cooler water from sprinklers or fire hoses without shattering.
After testing, different standards of fire glass are given time ratings concerning their integrity period and insulation period. The duration of these periods is usually between 20 minutes and 3 hours, indicating how long their protective qualities can last during a fire. With these time ratings in mind, varying standards of fire glass can be placed in different locations while still complying with Building Regulations.
